Target level
Public UCB information refers to UCB English Language Test / English Proficiency Test outcomes using CEFR-style levels such as B1, B1+, B2- and B2. For many BA and Masters routes, learners should be ready to communicate around B2 level, with component requirements depending on course level.
Speaking test format
The live online speaking test has two parts. In Part 1, the examiner asks personal questions. In Part 2, the candidate gives an approximately 3-minute talk on a topic, usually connected to the course they plan to study at UCB, after 5 minutes of preparation time.
What examiners listen for
Speak clearly, answer the question directly, develop ideas with reasons and examples, organise longer turns, interact naturally, and show enough vocabulary range for academic and everyday topics.
Important note
This is an independent OTC practice app based on public UCB language-entry and academic speaking preparation information. It is not an official UCB test paper, official UCB question bank or guaranteed-score product.
B2 speaking checklist / B2 口語檢查表

- I can discuss advantages, disadvantages, causes, effects and possible solutions.
- I can ask for clarification politely and recover if I forget a word.
- I can use academic linking phrases such as however, therefore, for example, in contrast and as a result.

Passport check
Prepare your passport before the test. You must show it to the examiner. If the passport is missing, unclear, or does not match the scanned copy held by the school, the examiner may terminate the test.
Headset required
You must wear headphones or a headset during the speaking test. If you do not have headphones, the test may be stopped.
Desk and room rules
Keep only one pen and one blank sheet of paper on the desk for the Part 2 task. You must be alone in the room. The examiner may ask you to scan the whole room at the start and during the test.
Technical readiness
Disable background filters. Test your camera and microphone before the exam. Be ready to share your screen if the examiner requests it.
Not test-ready consequence
If you do not meet the test-day requirements, the examiner may terminate the test as “not test-ready”. Students who are not test-ready must wait 3 weeks before rebooking; earlier rebookings may be automatically cancelled.
Privacy statement practice / 隱私聲明練習
- The examiner will read UCB's privacy statement at the beginning of the speaking test.
- You must clearly say whether you agree or do not agree. If you do not agree, the test will not continue.
- The statement explains that UCB needs to collect biometric data for the UCBELT test, including photo data such as ID or passport information and multimedia audio/video recordings of each test.
- Electronic copies of each test, together with your name and test results, are kept for at least five years to meet Home Office inspection requirements.

Examiner opening script
Hello. My name is your examiner today. Please show your passport to the camera. I will also read the privacy statement and ask you to confirm whether you agree before we continue.
Candidate rules
Answer in English only. Ask for clarification if needed. Do not read from a full script. For Part 2, use your five-minute preparation time to write keywords only.
After-test reflection
Write one strength, one repeated mistake, one pronunciation issue, one vocabulary goal and one target for the next mock test.
30-second expansion
Choose any Part 1 question. Give a direct answer, then extend with because, for example and as a result.
Chunking practice
Read answers in small meaning groups: I would say / the main reason is / in my experience / this helped me...
Stress practice
Emphasise key content words: important, difficult, useful, responsible, sustainable, opportunity.
Pause control
Use short pauses after linking phrases. Avoid filling every gap with um or er.
Repair drill
Practise: Let me rephrase that. What I mean is... I cannot remember the exact word, but...
Seminar response
Listen to one opinion, then respond with: I partly agree, but I would also add that...
Common pronunciation targets / 常見發音目標
- Final consonants: work, want, important, different, developed.
- Word stress: education, technology, environment, communication, responsibility.
- Connected speech: I would like to, one of the most, as a result of.
- Clarity over accent: the goal is understandable speech, not a native-speaker accent.
Warm-up diagnostic
Ask three Part 1 questions. Note fluency gaps, repeated grammar errors and pronunciation issues.
Part 2 coaching
Give one course-related cue card. Student plans for 5 minutes and speaks for about 3 minutes. Teacher interrupts only after the answer finishes.
Follow-up thinking
Use optional extension questions to push for reasons, examples, alternative views and solutions. This is preparation depth, not a separate stated test part.
Micro-drill
Choose one weakness: fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation or coherence. Drill it with 5 short repetitions.
Homework setting
Assign one full set, one vocabulary topic and one recorded Part 2 answer before the next session.
Teacher feedback sentence starters
- Your strongest point today was...
- The answer became clearer when you...
- Next time, try to add one concrete example after your reason.
- Your pronunciation is understandable, but watch the final sounds in...
- For extension practice, I want you to show both sides before giving your final opinion.
How to train vocabulary / 詞彙訓練方法
- Use Flashcard mode first: say the meaning in Chinese, then produce one English sentence aloud.先刷閃卡:看到英文詞,先說中文意思,再用英文造一個句子。
- Use Quiz mode after learning a topic. Wrong answers are saved into Review Weak Words.學完一個主題後做選擇題,答錯的詞會進入「弱詞復習」。
- Repeat until the same word can be explained, pronounced and used in a spoken answer.反覆練到能解釋、能讀清楚、能放入口語答案中使用。
Diagnostic day
Record Set 1 Part 1 and Part 2. Do not stop or re-record. Listen once and mark: fluency, vocabulary, grammar, coherence.
Part 1 speed
Practise 20 short answers. Each answer should be 2-4 sentences with one personal example.
Part 2 timing
Do three long turns. Use 5 minutes planning and about 3 minutes speaking. Focus on structure, not perfection.
Course-related thinking
Prepare eight course-linked examples using cause/effect, advantage/disadvantage, solution/evaluation and future-study relevance.
Vocabulary upgrade
Choose 5 topics. Learn 5 words per topic and use each word in one spoken sentence.
Mock test
Complete the readiness check, privacy consent practice, Part 1 and Part 2 without pausing. Then write three improvement targets.
Light review
Review sentence starters, repair phrases and your best examples. Sleep well; do not memorise full answers.
Self-scoring grid / 自評表

- Vocabulary: Did I use topic words accurately?
- Grammar: Did I use simple accurate structures and some complex sentences?
